Aasraa Food Pantry

Project of Sikh Youth Alliance Of North America (SYANA) Updated on 11/9/2017

Aasraa Food Pantry, sponsored by Sikh Youth Alliance of North America (SYANA) has its home in the Sikh Gurdwara of Rochester Hills, MI.

Aasraa Food Pantry is a community-based food distribution center providing access to basic food necessities for families in need; regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, gender, age or disability. We accomplish this through the generous giving of time and labor from dedicated community volunteers.

We opened our doors on February 12, 2015 and were able to serve 33 people. With all the support everyone has shown our small pantry over the last two and half years, we have been fortunate enough to serve 692 families and over 2,100 individuals.

We are turning to the DVN community to help with the purchasing food. Our goal is to have 200 members donate $10 to $20/month.

By the end of 2017 we will be expanding by partnering with SevaTruck. We are opening the 2nd SevaTruck in the United State, Sevatruck-Detroit and plan to bring free healthy prepared free meals to local communities.

Money raised will go primarily towards the purchase of food. We will also use funds to help keep up with truck maintenance, supplies (compostable plates, cleaning and cooking supplies) and more items to run the Pantry and SevaTruck.

Breakdown of some expenses:

$200: Run one pantry for approximately 55 people
$200: Per SevaTruck distribution for approximately 200 people. This includes food and compostable paper products.
$3000: Annual insurance for SevaTruck
$1000: Annual workers compensation Insurance for SevaTruck
